Emergency Response App

Raven was an idea born out of discussions with those who jump into action when disaster strikes. The number one issue that was brought up was the inability to communicate amongst the different responders, especially when cell towers are down. To solve this challenge, we created an app and corresponding hardware that would store and transmit the crucial data. I was the lead product designer for this project and identified three primary functionalities: Location, Inventory, and Chat

Location

The first need identified was the ability to communicate the location of a number of items

  • Dangerous items or situations.

  • People within the response zone. This could include responders, injured persons, and/or persons in need.

  • Supplies. One of the most important anecdotes from one of the responders we spoke to was that there were big flood lights that had arrived on the scene but no one knew they had arrived.

  • Medical. This would primarily be used for medical tents and places to seek medical help.

  • Custom. Every situation is different and the biggest need for this app was flexibility. Raven was created with the need in mind to allow it to be used in any unforeseen situation.

Inventory

Like the locational data, tracking the items at the scene was a huge need. I wanted to create a streamlined inventory system with a focus on rapid additions and a streamlined item identification system. Shown here is a mockup of a few of the options and adding screens.

Chat

The ability to communicate between the responders was the last critical need. I created a chat feature that would allow for public, private, and direct messages and a streamlined chat feature.

The intention for the chat feature in Raven was that every organization could have their own private channel while, for each event, there would be one public channel that all groups could chat over. Then, of course, the ability to have private, independent conversations.
